Ball mills and rod mills provide an effective means for grinding and blending materials in preparation for mineral liberation, from rock to dust. These grinding mills may be necessary for improved gold and mineral recoveries. Both ball and rod mills have a hollow cylindrical shell that rotates about an axis. The shell is filled with steel balls or rods, which, when rotated, crush the material down to the required product size. Rods are generally used when a fine product particle size is not essential in the process and are normally run in open circuit, whereas ball mills are used to grind material down to a very fine product particle size, usually in a closed circuit loop with a classification device.
Modular milling plants are available ranging in size from the very small 0.9 x 1.8m all the way up to 5.5 x 8.5m, catering for throughputs of less than 1tph to well over 100tph. APT specifies and designs the entire circuit around the mill, to ensure that the target product size is achieved for the downstream processes and/or recoveries.
